About Josh

Josh was born in Malaysia and grew up in a home filled with music. He showed an early interest and gift in music by picking up simple piano playing by ear at the age of 3. He started playing the piano from the age of 5.

By the age of 15, the piano had become Josh's first love and he was playing in school musicals, including reproductions of "Miss Saigon" and "Oklahoma". He began playing regularly in small groups and duos, focusing on accompaniment for solo and duet vocals. However, Josh found himself intrigued by the drums, an instrument he had never been exposed to, and decided to take some early lessons before a move to boarding school forced him to stop after only four months.

Josh moved to the UK in 2001 to attend university, and found his feet quickly by earning the position as resident pianist in an award-winning fine dining restaurant. He found his way onto the drum throne of the award-winning University of Warwick Big Band in 2004, gigging regularly. Two and a half amazing years later, Josh found himself playing with the band in the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Upon graduating from university, Josh has remained in the UK and is based in the West Midlands. He has moved his musical focus to drums, training under the likes of Paul Brook and Mal Garrett. Josh now plays for the Kate Mclaren Quartet, a Big Band, and various jazz groups. In addition to playing jazz, latin and funk music for various gigs and private functions, Josh has also collaborated with up and coming artistes across Asia and the UK for sessions and showcases, playing a variety of music styles, including latin, pop and fusion. Artistes include pop crooner Julian Perretta and sensational award-winning vocalist Juwita Suwito.

In September 2007, Josh was the drummer for the University of Warwick Big Band on the prestigious stages of the Alma Jazz Festival in Bologna, Italy. The band went on to blow away 8 other international big bands in a grand finale competition of the festival and were awarded the coveted "Best Big Band" award. The band are travelling to the Vienna Jazz Festival in June this year with Josh on the drum throne.

Josh is currently involved with the following projects:

Sunday Band

The Sunday Band is a Midlands-based jazz orchestra outfit which plays a mixture of traditional big band music, modern jazz and their own arrangements of popular soul, funk and Latin charts.

Junction 21 Big Band

Junction 21 is a Leicestershire based big band playing a varied repertoire, including classic swing, neo-swing, Miller, Rat-Pack, jazz, Latin, jive and ska. The band perform regularly in the Leicestershire and Midlands areas.

Jukebox Jets

This dance-inducing acoustic outfit play a selection of the best rock and roll tunes from the 60's, including top rockabilly tracks from Brian Setzer, Elvis, Buddy Holly and The Beatles.

University of Warwick Big Band

An international Big Band with a varied repertoire, playing everything from swing to jazz, latin, funk and blues. Credits include the prestigious Montreux, Vienna, and Alma Jazz Festivals. The band performs to a wide audience, from private functions and University balls to its own highly popular concerts, as well as annual tours to international jazz festivals.

Smaller jazz groups are also put together from players from the Big Band for the right setting - labelled on this site as UoWBB Small Band.

Tom Lindsay Jazz

From time to time, Josh plays with a variation of jazz groups made up of a selection of experienced instrumentalists and vocalists, led by Tom Lindsay of the Birmingham Conservatoire. This also includes the occasional dep for Tom's party band, The Groovitive.

FUNKtion

This dance-inducing function band are put together dependent on the requirement of the setting, and create music from a wide range of genres, including classic rock, soul, funk, blues and jazz. This young collective is primarily based in Warwickshire, and perform regularly in the surrounding area, and are available for a variety of performances and functions.

Josh has had the honour of working with a number of reknowned international music artistes, including pop crooner Julian Perretta and sensational award-winning vocalist Juwita Suwito. These are just a few of the artistes Josh has had the opportunity to work with:
